Cooking over, or in front of a downhearth fire only ceased relatively recently in this country although still practised today in some remote areas of the continent. Many different kinds of cooking could be carried out at the same time on a heart: a cauldron would be hanging over a fire seething a stew while a spit roasted meat or game in front, a posnet or skillet simmered in the embers and some bread toasted in a downhearth toaster.
Condition: Good. Images taken before gentle cleaning and waxing.
