This rare and very unusual flask was possibly used to hold masala chai. The origins of the spices and herbs used in chai (like ginger, cardamom, and pepper) date back over 5,000 years to ancient Indian royal courts, where they were used in Ayurvedic medicine as a "Kadha" (herbal infusion) to boost immunity and balance energies. The flask would have been attached to the saddle of the horse of a high ranking Rajput or Deccan princely owner. A related example is illustrated in Terlinden, C., Mughal Silver Magnificence, Antalga, 1987 p.112. Another comparable flask with chain is in the National Museum, New Delhi.
