John and Paul Nash were British artists and brothers who gained prominence for their depictions of the English landscape and their wartime experiences. Paul Nash was a trained artist, attending the Slade School of Art, while John Nash was self-taught but equally dedicated to his art. Both served in the First World War, were appointed as official war artists, and later explored surrealism and modernism in their work. After serving with Artists’ Rifles during World War I John Nash was appointed official war artist. He subsequently taught at the Royal College of Art. Nash illustrated books between the wars including Urne Buriall and The Garden of Cyrus. He is regarded as one of Britain’s greatest landscape painters and his work is held in many public and private collections worldwide.
